About the British Compact Collectors' Society
Founded in 1995 by Juliette Edwards, the British Compact Collectors’ Society (BCCS) grew from the enthusiasm sparked by her privately published book on British compacts. What began as a small circle of collectors has since evolved into a thriving international community of around 200 members, all united by a shared love of vintage glamour.
Our members
Today, the BCCS is run by an elected Committee and welcomes members from every stage of the collecting journey. Some have spent decades building extensive collections and specialist knowledge; others are just beginning to explore the charm of powder compacts and may own only one or two pieces. A number of members also sell compacts through online platforms and antique fairs, contributing to the rich pool of expertise within the Society.
Our purpose
Our purpose is to celebrate and promote the appreciation of powder compacts and the many related items that accompany them – powder boxes and bowls, vanity cases, carryalls, advertisements, and other vintage glamour treasures. We also champion the social history behind these objects, recognising the evolving roles, identities, and aspirations of women that they reflect.
Just as importantly, the BCCS exists to bring people together. We help collectors connect, share knowledge, and enjoy the camaraderie that comes from a shared passion. Many lasting friendships have begun through the Society, and our events, publications, and online spaces continue to nurture that sense of community.
Something for everyone
Collectors often find their own niche – whether it’s the bold geometry of Art Deco design, the work of a particular manufacturer, or a favourite decorative style. Whatever your interest, there is always something new to discover, admire, and cherish. Many of our members also collect other vintage glamour items, so you’ll find enthusiasts of vintage make‑up and beauty products, handbags, and costume jewellery among our ranks.
